Shipping restrictions on LiFePO4 battery caught my eye

I recently purchased another K2 Energy K2B12V10EB battery (4 cells in series, 10AH, 123 Watt-hour LiFePO4 chemistry – in a package similar to a 7AH SLA battery but about 1/3 the weight).

I noted with interest that the package had a very large red warning label that read “Primary Lithium Batteries — Forbidden for transport aboard passenger aircraft”.

Concerned that might prevent me from traveling by air with my radio and battery; I found and read a government document that describes the situation.  In summary it seems that carrying such a battery in your carry-on bag is OK, but you are not allowed to pack it with equipment in your checked bag.  I’m no lawyer, your mileage may vary, etc., but here’s the document:

I can’t wait any longer…

While I am anxiously awaiting Elecraft’s release of their KX3 QRP rig, my fingers are itching to try something new.  It’s been awhile since I’ve built a radio from a kit (the last time was a HW-16 years ago) — althought I’ve been building all sorts of other things over the years.

So I have just ordered a TenTec 1320 (20 Meter CW QRP Rig).  That should keep my fingers busy for a few days this fall.

Why I like BuddiPole

I have mentioned my BuddiPole antenna before.  I think BuddiPole tends to elicit some strong responses from folks.  There is the camp that swears BuddiPole is too expensive for what you get.  There are those that feel BuddiPole is poorly made.  And finally there are those that absolutely love BuddiPole products.  I fall strongly into the latter group.

BuddiPole isn’t inexpensive.  A basic deluxe package with 9-foot tripod is $400, or $475 for the 16-foot tripod version.  Everyone has to make a value judgement for themselves, but in my opinion, you are getting a high-quality set of integrated parts that function well and does the job it is intended for quite well:  a light-weight, quick to assemble portable antenna that uses tapped loading coils to provide multi-band coverage from 40-meters to 2-meters.  With a couple of accessory parts it is easy to make full size (half-wave dipoles or quarter-wave verticals) from 20-meters and up, or 2 or 3 element beams for 10 meters and up.

Those that feel BuddiPole is poorly made are usually complaining about broken adjustable whips that will break/bend if the antenna falls over.  Those folks have usually NOT installed the guy-wire kit per the instructions.  The antenna was meant to be portable.  It can be setup in 10 minutes and taken down and stowed away in the same amount of time.  There is little reason to leave it up during storms, or to not use the simple tent-stake guys to keep it from falling over.  If you take care of it, it will perform its intended job for a long time.

Personally I’m not a fan of shortened antennas.  Short = small = lighter weight for sure, but performance suffers.  While you do have to use coils on the lower frequency bands, their use is optional on 20-meters, and not required at all from 17 to 2-meters.  A full-size 1/4 wave 20-meter vertical is a fantastic performing antenna since the take-off angle is low.  Even with a single elevated 1/4 wave counterpoise, losses due to radiation resistance are not substantial.  It is easy to change bands by adjusting coils or adding/removing sections.  Preliminary positions are color coded.

Little things like velcro straps to hold cables in place and attach guys, and things like multiple pockets to hold parts in the nylon carry bags strike me as the height of customer-centered design.  These guys clearly use the product themselves and constantly think of ways to improve it and make it easier to use.  BuddiPole continues to add accessory parts to the product line to reduce weight, increase performance, or add new configurations.

Post Hurricane Irene, after my primary antenna had beed damaged by the storm, I had a full performance 20-meter vertical antenna on the air in under 15 minutes.

Nothing is perfect, and BuddiPole isn’t either.  My biggest complaint is that the shop seems so busy with orders that they are somewhat slow in responding to queries via email (expect it to take a day or two), and their website is substantially behind the times in terms of missing products.  A bit more focus on that area would make the BuddiPole experience top in class.  However, they do stand behind their products.  One of my accessory arms, several years old, came apart.  They sent out a replacement free of charge.  And as the product has evolved over the years, they try to work with their customers to make sure older parts can be used as is, or adapted.

Generator follow-up

It seems like the entire neighborhood is abuzz with the sound of generators.  I can’t hear the cricket chirping noise now.  Neighbors that are 500+ feet away are making more noise that the Honda 8 feet from me.  It’s pretty bad when you can’t hear your own generator run.  We ran the Honda from 6:45 AM until 5:45 PM, or 11 hours this afternoon on almost a tank of gas.  A few more loads have joined the party.

The power company reports that a tad less than 60% of their customers are without power 36 hours after the storm passed.  In that 36 hours they have reduced the outages by about 10%.  If that rate continues then it will take 2 weeks to restore power.  The odd thing is that the simple stuff generally comes up quickly.  Geez, what a mess.

Irene, I say again Irene

Pretty much all of the east coast from North Carolina to New England was visited this weekend by an unwelcome guest — Hurricane Irene.  This was a massive storm, over 500 miles in diameter, that managed to dump an enormous amount of water onto already soaked land, causing massive flooding.  After hitting North Carolina as a category 3 storm, it made landfall again off of Coney Island, NY as a category 1.  It proceeded to travel up the Hudson river.  Areas to the west of the storm were soaked with a foot or more of rain.  This included NYC, which suffered substantial flooding (and the first mandatory evacuation on record).  Rhode Island, about 150 miles to the east took the brunt of the wind.  Despite the reduction in force to a tropical storm, RI saw gusts of over 85 MPH and as of yesterday afternoon, between 1/2 and 2/3 of all customers were without power.

Of course we knew the hurricane was coming, and the press did a wonderful job of stoking hysteria.  I figured no matter what it was going to be a bad power-fail situation.  RI’s last significant hurricane, Bob, happened 20 years ago, which meant trees had grown up and engulfed wires, and had done so without being tested by high winds.  So on our return from Cape Cod, the first thing I did was contact Mayberry’s, a huge RV supplier in New Jersey, and ordered a Honda EU2000i generator.  FedEx had it in our hands early Friday morning, two days before the storm.

I had purchased a 4KW Colman generator after Hurricane Bob, as we had lost power for 11 days following hurricane Gloria in 1985, and about 2 days after Bob.  I rationalized that buying a generator would dovetail well with my ham radio hobby and would virtually guarantee no storms in the future (that guarantee lasted for 20 years — making the best return on an investment ever).

The Colman worked fine for just about 20 years, although I never did use it.  A couple of times a year I would fire it up and run it under load for an hour or two then shut it back off.  That routine worked well until last year, when I stowed the generator with fuel in it during the summer of 2009, and didn’t attempt to start it again until the fall of 2010.  By then the gas had evaporated and had ruined the carburetor.  I had that replaced and the unit serviced last year.

Despite having a working generator again, I had fallen out of like with mine.  For starts it was massively heavy.  I could only barely lift it off a wheeled cart by myself.  Starting it was always a problem as it took quite a bit of effort to get that 8 HP engine turning over.  It was loud (as commercial generators tend to be) and it would vibrate all over the place.  Finally it wouldn’t run long on a tank of gas.  But frankly I had fallen in love with Honda generators which I had seen running at several events.  I say “see” because hearing them is a challenge unless things are quiet and you are standing right next to it.  They purr and make less noise than a human voice.

As I type this, my Honda is so quiet on the back deck that I can’t hear it above the sound of keys clicking on my keyboard, or the refrigerator humming away.   Yesterday it ran our lights and refrigerator from 3 PM until 11:30 PM on a half gallon of gas.  It was a strange feeling to be the only house with lights on for miles around.  Thanks for a great product, Honda!

Cape Cod: Home of Wireless, Whales and Lighthouses

My family and I spent a few days on the cape during during late August (hoping that the late date would mean less traffic and crowding).  On our way out to our hotel, we arrived several hours before check-in time, so we decided just to explore some, driving around to find some of the cape’s 13+ lighthouses.  Our first attempt at the Nauset light was met with the dreaded “Parking Lot Full” sign and a park ranger who looked like his day wasn’t going well.  Not wanting to test nasty, we turned around and headed to the Cape Lighthouse (also known as the Highland Lighthouse — located in Truro MA).

After parking in the golf course lot, we walked out to the light, and as we were getting closer, I could have sworn that I saw a 20-meter dipole strung between the light and the house below.  Rounding the back of the lighthouse, my suspicions were confirmed — sure enough there was a bright yellow tent housing all sorts of ham radio information and two happy hams working the special event station N1NC on 20-meter SSB.  They were participating in LotA (Lighthouses on the Air); an international event designed to get ham radio operators on the air celebrating both ham radio and lighthouses.  You can see the tent housing the radio station near the bottom-center of the photograph below, and if you look closely enough you can see the coax feed running to a sloping dipole.

The operators on N1NC explained that they were a public-service oriented radio club and this was part of their annual service.  They described the event and managed to get me totally jazzed.  Later that afternoon after having dinner, I took my BuddiPole and configured it as 1/4 wave 20 meter vertical, which I clamped to the wall of our porch.  The counterpoise wire was strung to the back of a chair.  A quick check of the AA-54 antenna analyzer confirmed that I had a low SWR right around 14.3 MHz.  I pulled my FT-817 out of my “Go-Bag” and was on the air in about 20 minutes.  I never was able to contact N1Nc, for all I know they were off the air, but I did have a QSO with a Lighthouse station in Belgium, also celebrating the event.  That made my day, and I packed up my gear.  From start to finish, less than an hour went into making a solid international contact for the LotA event, and everything was neatly packed and stowed away.

We saw many more lighthouses over our four-day visit.  But the highlight had to be the whale watch out of Provincetown.  Pretty much everywhere we go that has any sort of exposure to the sea, we manage to find tour-boat and get a chance to see the local sea-life.  I can honestly say, however, that this whale watch was the best ever.  To begin with, the weather was perfect (I’ve been rained on and frozen in some other attempts).  But the real reason was an unbelievable number of whales.  The naturalist said that we saw at least 25 unique whales that day.  They would come up in groups of two to four, blowing bubbles on the way up — trapping fish inside a shimmering wall of bubbles.  A few seconds before the whales would surface, the water would be boiling with fish and birds would swoop in to take their toll.  The whales would then surface with their mouths open and drag themselves along the water scooping up an enormous quantity of fish.  We witnessed this behavior time and time again for at least 90 minutes.

Cape Cod has the honor of being the birth-place of commercial wireless.  Marconi set up a station in Chatham, MA and relayed messages via cable to a transatlantic transmitting station near Truro.  This station then sent the message overseas.  Here is the historical marker:

SCORE!!!

Don, VE3VRW, from Dog Park Software, was a real champ and helped explain the reason why I was having issues with my IC-9100 and MacDoppler.  It turns out when Icom wrote their custom drivers for Windows, they made sure they enumerated the two USB ports with the CI-V control port as the lower of the two.  Unfortunately, Icom has decided to ignore the Apple market and does NOT support the IC-9100 on that platform.  However, generic drivers are available from SiLabs.

What was happening was each time the radio powered up, it would randomly enumerate either the first or second USB port for CI-V control.  So MacDoppler, set to use the lower port, would work sometimes, and not other times.  The quick 5 second work-around is simply to select the “other port” on the config window to get things working.  Maybe the best fix of all is to use an external USB to CI-V converter.  Because it enumerates a single USB port, it will always appear as the same port to the Apple Mac.

Anyway, with MacDoppler working and my IC-9100 running Mode JA (V/U), I made a rather long contact on SSB with Tom, K8TL over FO29 during the 19:20 UTC pass.  Unlike other satellite QSOs I recall from the past, this one went on for about 10 minutes — a real rag-chew.

What makes this special is that the final QSO recorded in my logbook when I went off the air on Jan 16, 2001, was a contact with WD8DPA over FO29.  (Back then I was active on AO10, FO20, FO29 and RS12).  I made three FO29 contacts during the 03:50 UTC pass, turned off my equipment, packed it up in boxes, and went QRT for more than a decade.

But like the Phoenix, ham radio has risen again to a place of prominence in my life.  FO29 was there to see me off 10 years ago, and it was there to welcome me back to the satellite modes today.  That’s pretty cool.

One of those days!

So the day before yesterday, I was determined to make a contact via ARISSat-1.  I had MacDoppler fired up and tuning my rig during a late night pass.  There was a great daylight pass in the early morning hours.  Sunrise and the alarm came at about the same time, and I dashed downstairs so I could get everything warmed up and ready to go.

MacDoppler decided to die on me.  I couldn’t get the “Enable Radio” check box to work.  I was greeted with a spinning beach ball for about 6 seconds, then a “thunk” noise.

By the time I went through about a dozen different attempts to get things going, I had completely missed the pass.  And as it turned out, that was the last daylight time pass for about 10 days.  Sigh.

To add insult to injury, today the same thing happened with FO29.  MacDoppler refused to tune the radio.  As I mentioned before I had restored it to operating condition earely this morning.  And I had been using it for four days over the weekend with no issue — enough that I decided to register my copy.

Several emails from support later and I had a general consensus of “it works for others but not you”.  But I got it working by a strange combination of power cycling and cable pulling.  The last linear transponder bird for the day was VO52.  I heard myself on the downlink calling CQ, but nobody was working the bird.  Sigh.

During a low-power pass of ARISSat-1 I had no trouble hearing my CW signal.  In fact the bird was quite active — a lot of CQing, but no QSOs as the 40 second on / 160 second off low-power mode makes for a choppy existence.

There are so few linear transponder birds left.  FO29 is on again/off again as there are power issues and it shuts down in the dark.  VO52 is there and workable if people would use it.  And ARISSat is fantastic if it was just in high power mode all the time.

AMSAT needs some new linear birds up about 600 km.  I think the last several attempts have proven that the big huge P3D birds just are more than hams can pay for and launch.  The LEO FM birds are a nightmare as it is one signal at a time.

ARISSat-1 Transponder worked 2 of 3 times I checked

Using 5 watts and low-gain omnidirectional eggbeater antennas on both the uplink and downlink, I had no trouble hearing my downlink signal at S8 (the noise is S2-3).  I did this experiment twice during low-power mode.  It’s a challenge for me to find the signal just due to the amount of time the transponder is on the air (on the air 40 seconds out of every 160 seconds; 25% of the time ).

I have been able to get HRD to work with my IC-9100 to adjust the downlink doppler, but it refuses to adjust both the uplink and downlink together — something it should be capable of doing.  Downlink-only is fine for copy of the beacon or BPSK signal, but for the Mode U/V, transponder, not being able to adjust for +/- 10 KHz uplink doppler is a killer.  Not only is it hard to find a signal that is drifting very quickly, the entire passband of the satellite is only 15 KHz wide.  If you started sending at the middle of the passband, you would quickly be 2.5 KHz outside the passband just due to doppler.

If if the uplink remains in-band, a signal that is drifting that quickly is very hard to tune by hand.  This is complicated by the behavior of the IC-9100 in SAT Mode, which locks the uplink and downlink VFOs — so any adjustment to one, causes the other to change as well.  So it is necessary to activate the SUB Band VFO, adjust it, then go back to SAT Mode — a process that involves lots of button pushing.  So it may well be that the signal was there all three times, and I just didn’t find it once.

I’m trying out MacDoppler, which at least can control both the uplink and downlink frequency.  However 10 Hz tuning steps leaves something to be desired.  (HRD does 1 Hz).  The other issue with running the Mac program is that the Mac version of the BPSK decode firmware lacks any tuning indicator, unlike the PC version.

PS:  The Alaskan Aurora site is still talking about a minor flare from August 2nd that has already hit earth.  The flare that just happened early today is about 2 orders of magnitude larger, and is almost an order of magnitude larger than what is required to start causing trouble with satellites.  Not saying this is doom/gloom, just saying it is going to catch people’s attention.
