Who does #2 work for…

I have a horrible habit of putting things into my pocket along with my car keys.  In the case of hand-held radios, the combination of metal keys is a scratch just waiting to happen.

Such was the fate of my trusty TH-F6.  The screen had become almost frosted from minor scratches and a couple of very deep ones were quite distracting.  It had gotten to the point that it was hard to read.

I finally broke down and logged into my favorite store (Amazon — but HRO is a close second) and searched for plastic screen polish.  I was rewarded with several choices.  One in particular caught my eye (and not just because there were about six different prices for the same thing).  It was a set of 3 buffing/polishing compounds made by Novus.  #3 for deep scratches.  #2 for small scratches, and #1 for polishing to a bright finish.

I took about 10 minutes today to use #2 and #1 several times, and I can tell you that my screen looks almost brand new (if I try, I can just see a faint bit of the deepest scratch left behind).  More than likely going to #3 would take out the last of the scratch — but I didn’t even bother as the improvement was already good enough.

We’ll have fun, fun, fun till our daddy takes the T-Bird away…

What do you think of when you hear the word “FunCube”?  If you are a Ham Radio operation then perhaps you might think of the FunCube satellite.

But what if you heard the phrase “FunCube Dongle”?  Would you call the police?

The FunCube Dongle just happens to be a fantastic Software Defined Radio that covers a frequency range of 64 MHz to 1700 MHz, with excellent sensitivity in the 2 Meter and 70 Centimeter ham bands (like 0.15 uV for 12dB SINAD NBFM).  It was originally designed to be a low-cost way of getting a satellite capable receiver into the hands of schools.

Go there and check it out if a low-cost SDR intrigues you.  Meanwhile, I pinched a picture from that website to entice you!

The more things change…

Ever watch the sales and get to the point where you can predict when something is going to be discontinued.  I hate to say it, but I have that feeling in the case of the Kenwood TH-F6A, which has been a faithful radio buddy of mine for the past several years.

I was looking for something to replace an aging Icom hand-held and do a little exploration of the 220 MHz band.  So I found the TH-F6A tri-band handheld.  (Back then, tri-band meant 2-m/1.25-m/70-cm.  These days the 220 band is all but a memory, and tri-band probably means 6-m/2-m/70-cm.)  Not only is the radio tiny but still usable (it will fit in your shirt pocket, yet aging eyes can still read the screen), but with 5 watts out on all three bands, it is no slouch.  And to top that off, it has a general coverage receiver built-in with CW/SSB/AM/WFM reception to boot.  I use that little hand-held all the time to check my HF signal for distortion.

My only gripe was the linear power supply wall-wart used to charge it was HUGE — strange for something that put out 13 Volts at 0.5 Amps these days.

Joes hit one out of the park with JT65-HF…

Ham radio operatiors have been using the moon to communicate for decades. No, they aren’t listening in to astronauts walking on the moon like I did back when I first became a ham. They are actually using the moon as a reflector to bounce a signal back toward the earth. If you have a big antenna, a fantastic receiver, and enough power you can actually make a contact this way.

In the old days of EME communication, CW was king, and repeating your call or signal report was done many many times to improve chances of success. Contacts were often scheduled in advance so as much information as possible would be known up front (like exact time to listen and frequency).

The tremendous distances involved made this a challenge for even the best equipped operators as signal loss, dopler shift, and noise often made contacts impossible. Joe Taylor, the Nobel Prize winning astrophysicist and ham, K1JT, pondered that problem and designed a brilliantly effective encoding method that actually allows signals that can’t even be heard to be decoded using advanced signal processing methods. His technique involves large amounts of redundancy, a fairly restrictive format, and the exchange for the minimum amount of information (call signs, signal reports, and locations) required for a valid contact. Thanks Joe #1 !!!

Joe Large, W6CQZ (also W4CQZ) took the work of Joe Taylor, and adapted it to HF world, enabling hams to make global contacts using minimal antennas (like a wire tossed out the window) and QRP transmitters (like the very popular FT-817). It isn’t hard at all to work half-way around the world using 5 watts or less even in sub-par band conditons.

Joe has written a fantastic program called JT65-HF that is open source and free. It can be found at this link. Joe is extreemly active supporting the software. He is very receptive to suggestions, quickly implementing good ones, and patiently listening and discussing some not so good ones. The JT65-HF user group is quite active and can be found at this link.

QST had an article written by Steven Ford on JT65-HF in the April 2011 issue on page 45. He posted an audio file of a JT65-HF signal that can be heard at this link.

I plan on blogging more about JT65 and other digital modes in the near future.

You are never too old for an elmer…

Despite my fascination with PSK31, I couldn’t help but notice there was a very odd sounding mode that was being used close to the PSK31 frequency on the 80 meter band.  I tried all the digital modes offered by FLdigi (and there are lots), but nothing matched the bandwidth.  Finally after hearing a rather loud station using that mode, I took a chance and transmitted a request for the unknown station to identify itself and the mode being used.  I did that over the next 15 minutes or so, every time the station went silent, with no luck.

Unsatisfied, and still curious, I returned to PSK31 and made a few more contacts.  The next day I called CQ using PSK31 and N1GKE returned my call.  He had been waiting since the prior day for my return, as he was the operator behind the mystery mode.  He said it was called JT65A-HF, and it was, in his estimation, a great digital mode for HF.  N1GKE also happened to live just down the road from me, so we quickly decided to meet on one of the local 2-meter repeaters to discuss things further.

As luck would have it, my 817 was simply not powerful enough to make the repeater despite the fact that it would key up.  We tried several different repeaters with little luck.  Eventually I fired up my old 790, which puts out 10 times the power, only to find that even 50 watts wasn’t working.  Finally we had success when I was able to make a 70 cm repeater across the bay from me.  Myrton was very patient, even as I spent about 90 minutes swapping various antennas and rigs around.  He was finally able to give me enough information on JT65 that I was able to make my first JT65A-HF QSO the next day during lunch.

A lot changes in ten years…

One of the first things I did after getting back on the air was try to put together a history of sort (the fruits of which can be seen in some of my posts filed under “History”), with an eye toward joining the Quarter Century Wireless Association (QCWA).  My father had always pushed me to join that group (despite the fact that he never joined — in his mind he wasn’t active enough).  When I was eligible to join them after 25 years of being a ham, it just seemed strange to be hanging out with a bunch of old men when I was still in my 30’s, so I took a pass.   After rediscovering radio and knowing that I’d been hamming it up for 41 years, I figured it was time to take the leap of faith and join QCWA.  I look forward to this fall’s annual meeting which is being held a few miles from my house (RI is a wonderful destination place for conferences and such), and I will wear my 40 year pin with pride.

When I did get back on the air, I quickly discovered that most of the satellites I worked before were off the air, leaving mostly FM-only birds with few exceptions.  I also discovered that popular HF modes like AMTOR, PACTOR, PACTOR II, Clover, and G-TOR had gone the way of the dodo.  45-baud RTTY was still alive and kicking (oddly enough) as I discovered during the RTTY contest my first weekend back on the air, and there were obviously some new modes that I hadn’t heard before.

Google is always my friend, and I quickly discovered that the signals I was hearing were PSK31 (a digital mode that was just starting to show up as I was going off the air a decade earlier).  I also discovered that the old TNC equipment like my PK232 had been mostly replaced by “sound card” DSP.  I quickly downloaded a few programs just to hear what was going on by using my PC microphone.  Sure enough I could decode the transmissions and even see them on a waterfall display (which was a visual technique used to tune in the signal and discover activity — something else that had showed up during the past decade).

The FT-817ND has always been a very popular radio and has lots of accessories available.  One of the more popular sound-card interfaces, made by Tigertronics, had cables built for the FT-817 that pretty much turned things into a turn-key operation.  So I acquired a SignaLink USB interface for the 817, and coupled that with a copy of the W1HKJ’s FLDigi program

I was in seventh heaven.  PSK31 seemed ideal for HF.  It didn’t beat the relay in your rig to death ‘chirping’ like AMTOR did, and there was a fair amount of activity.  Despite being “in the mud” with my puny 5 watt QRP signal I was having a fair amount of success.  But ham radio as I knew from personal experience could be a fickle mistress.  Little did I know that a week after meeting PSK31 a new digital mode would catch my fancy!

I think a confluence of several things got me to dust off my radio equipment and return to the air in February of 2011 after a decade of inactivity.  First off, I was pretty depressed now that my son was away at college.  Our life as a family had revolved around his life in sports, music and school.  Thankfully it wasn’t entirely cold-turkey as his younger sister was now active in sports, music and school as well.  But I was still missing him big time.

Additionally, I never liked the winters in New England.  Despite the beauty of the fall, when all the leaves change, and the promise of rebirth that spring brings, winter was something that I dreaded at best.  As I crept into my 50’s, dread was turning into something worse — outright depression (it is called SAD — how appropriate).  Thankfully my job keeps me pretty busy and I try to work non-stop during the winter just to make it pass by quickly.

The winter of 2010/2011 was a doozy.  I can remember bragging to my sister-in-law in Alabama that we were having a green Christmas, with no snow expected (and only a single small storm that left a dusting sometime in November, I think).  I believe it might have been 60 degrees Christmas day.  I should have known better.  We got hammered with snow on December 27th, and never saw the ground again until early March.  Despite the fact that we only had about twice as much snow as usual, we got it all in six major storms (so did the entire east coast) as opposed to our usual dozen or more smaller storms.  At one point, our mailbox was just a black dot that appeared half-way up the side of a huge pile of snow that was more than eight feet tall.

So being snow bound and lonely had something to do with my checking out the AMSAT web site late January.  I discovered that a new satellite was going to launch in a few days from the International Space Station.  This was an opportunity too good to pass up.

I wasn’t too sure that the Kenwood TS-790 would still work after sitting unused for more than a decade (My HF gear was even older), but I did have a more recent Yaesu FT-817ND QRP radio that covered VHF and UHF.  (Ever since my exposure to the TenTec Argonaut in 1973, I had a fascination with low power radios).  So I decided to fire that up, check out the antennas, and see if I could work some QRP.  My first QSO in a decade was across Narragansett Bay, on February 10th, using the 817 on 2-meter SSB (thank you N2ULF).

I hadn’t had a HF antenna at my home since the late 90’s (my wife had called it an ugly mess, so I took it down).  So I decided to brave the winter and the 3+ feet of snow to run about 150 feet of wire to several trees in our backyard and use it as a long wire.  My old home-brew tuner was long gone by then, but there were several inexpensive tuners purpose built for the 817.  So I purchased one from LDG and parked it on top of my 817.

Nine 1/4 wave counterpoises (80, 40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 12, 10 and 6-meters) were attached to the other side of a 4:1 balun so that I would minimize the RF coming back into the shack via the coax.  With the exception of 17-meters the tuner has provided a 1:1 match on all bands, including 160-meters.  By February 12th I was back on HF, and happened to start with the RTTY contest going on that weekend.   At this point I’ve made QSOs on all of the HF bands except the secondary status channelized 5.3 MHz USB-only band.

When a SK hits home…

My father and I enjoyed QSOs almost weekly until his death in September 1998, not too long after we returned from a visit with our newborn daughter.

That really took the wind out of my sails in terms of ham radio.  I pretty much gave up on the low band stuff and casual QSOs, and concentrated on Satellite modes.  I purchased a Kenwood TS-790A to have a decent VHF/UHF radio shortly before my father died, in anticipation of the launch of the new Phase 3D satellite that would briefly become AO-40.

My family moved into our current home in North Kingstown in November of 1998.  I installed egg-beater antennas for 144 and 430 MHz in the spring of 1999 as well as antenna mounted pre-amps from SSB Electronics.

AO-40 finally launched in December of 2000, but suffered major issues that essentially left the satellite useless.  It was a huge disappointment for many folks.  (If I recall correctly someone forgot to remove a brightly colored lock-out tag that was marked “Remove before launch”, which lead to a cascade of failures once the motor was fired to boost it into higher orbit.)  Had AO-40 survived, I probably would have remained active in radio, but when it suffered a failure of almost all systems, I really lost interest.  With no satellite, and no weekly

schedules with my father to keep me going, I made my last contact during January of 2001 on FO-29.

After that I packed up my low band and satellite gear and stuck mostly to VHF/UHF FM, but I wasn’t very active.  I did try some high speed packet around 2003, but nothing held my interest for very long.  My attention focused to raising my kids and work.  It would be a decade before I would return to ham radio, and I doubt I had more than a dozen contacts in that 10 year stretch between 2001 and 2011.

These microprocessor things might have a future…

I married the love of my life in June of 1982.  We had been together since 1976 in college, and we moved to our first house (located in West Warwick, RI) in January of 1984 (the same time that Apple was introducing the Macintosh).

A house of my own meant better antennas were now possible.  While I had dreams of antennas on top of a tower, that wasn’t to be.  But at the time I had been fully bitten by the packet radio craze and setup a rather high power digital station on 2-meters that served as a relay link between hams in the north and south of RI.  Other digital modes like Amtor had started up on the HF bands, and I messed with that, and continued to work with the Satellites.

I did a lot of listening to AO-10, and managed a few contacts by keying a dual band VHF/UHF Kenwood FM rig on the uplink, and using a 2-meter converter tied to my IC-740 on the downlink.  I also managed a contact with one of the shuttle missions before the STS-51 Challenger explosion in early 1986, and after that with a ham abord the Russian MIR.

My father retired back to Alabama in the mid-80’s, and we kept weekly schedules on CW and SSB ever since he moved.  He bought a Kenwood TS-440 right after his move and used it for years. I decided to join him on the Kenwood bandwagon and bought a TS-850SAT around 1994.

Time to grow up and seek my fortune…

In the fall of 1975, I enrolled in Union College and spent the next four and a half years earning my BSEE.  I began my Freshman year commuting from my parents home, which was only a couple of miles away, but quickly discovered that college is one part mental and two parts social.  By December of 1975 I announced my intention to move out on my own.

Ham Radio didn’t play much of a part in my life as I moved from one horrible apartment to another, and worked hard to pay the bills and study for class.  But I did join the college club station, W2UC, and enjoyed working my first real DX with their Drake equipment and beam.  By May of 1979, when I still had a half year to go, I couldn’t stand it anymore, and somehow scraped up $705.11 and bought a Yaesu FT-101FE.  I have no idea how I managed to pay for that, and tuition, and room and board, but I had a fantastic summer.  I lived about a mile from the school and would carry that FT-101 in my arm to the club station and use it.  Plus I had a stealthy wire antenna hanging outside my apartment.  Ham radio was alive and well.

Actually I do have an idea of how I paid for things.  While I was in college I started designing control systems and doing projects based on microprocessors (Intel 4004/8008/8080) — a brand new emerging technology at the time.  I was lucky enough to be able to start lecturing on this professionally while I was still in school (there were very few people who understood the technology at the time — remember the IBM PC didn’t start shipping until August of 1981).  During those lectures, I bumped into a young manager who was working for GE Research and Development.  Ed Miller was his name, and he insisted that I look him up when the time came.

I did that, and took a job working for GE Wiring Devices in December of 1979, were I began a career designing lighting control equipment (saves energy by making sure lights are turned off or reduced in level in industrial and commercial buildings).  Through the technology and company names have changed, I continue to do the same sort of thing 32 years later.

As soon as I moved into my new apartment in Warwick Rhode Island, I dropped my WB2ZIB call, and went back to using WB4SON (the FCC rules had changed and your call sign area no longer had to match your living address).  I immediately applied microprocessor technology to ham radio, and designed several devices to assist me with my radio work.  I took up an interest in RTTY and designed several interfaces (both audio and digital).  I also renewed my interest in Satellite modes, and built a few receive and transmit converters to use with my FT-101.

In August of 1980, I purchased a Yaesu FT-207R 2-meter hand-held and YM-24 Mic for $335 to replace my old crystal based TR-22.  I acquired a 50 watt output amplifier for it, and my father (still living in Niskayuna NY) and I  would chat with each other weekly via a repeater located on Mount Tom in Western Mass. We were about 175 miles apart as the crow flies, but having a repeater 1200 feet in the air half-way between us sure helped.

In April of 1983, I replaced my FT-101FE with a more modern (fully solid state) Icom IC-740 that supported all the new WARC ham bands (I modified the FT-101 to work on 30 meters).  That was a very exciting radio in its day.  With an internal power supply and CW filter, it sold for just about $1060.
