Just over 3 months to go for this year’s goals

As of 9/18, I have 735 Challenge points (out of 1000), 187 Countries Confirmed, need 4 countries for 10m DXCC and 26 for 80m DXCC.  So some decent progress has been made toward the year-end goal of 200 Confirmed Countries, but I doubt that will happen.  (I did make my original goal of 175, and I did complete DXCC Digital.)  Also I had a goal of 225 total countries worked, but am only at 219.

As for 5BWAS, things aren’t so hot.  I still need Alaska for 80m WAS, then 14 more for 10m WAS.  Triple Play still stands at 139.

All Set for JotA

JOTA2013

JOTA is the Boy Scout’s “Jamboree-on-the-Air”.  This is a HUGE scouting event, which involved over 700,000 participants last year with 13,500 stations on the air.  It can be combined with a camp-over (a “Camporee”), or could be run out of a volunteer’s home.

The objective is to expose Cub and Boy Scouts to Amateur Radio by allowing them to make contacts on-the-air (under the watchful eye of control operators).  It just takes a moment to understand that these boys and young men are the life-blood for sustaining our hobby.

My club, Newport County Radio Club, has obtained a permit for Glen Park (our Field Day location), we are sponsoring the event, and we expect scouts from multiple troops to attend.  A large percentage of them will be working toward their Radio Merit Badge.  To that end, I had to apply to become a Merit Badge Counselor for our area.  My credentials arrived yesterday.

Some tips for WSJT-X

So after a week of experience with WSJT-X and in the interest of full disclosure, I am clearly no expert.  But here are a few gems that I’ve found by reading through the manual a few times:

  • Set the incoming level to about 30 on the scale.  Best results are when the slider to the right is about mid-scale, so use your sound card controls to position it to 30.
  • The decode rate is critical.  I was pretty sure mine was set at the recommended 48000 samples per second.  I had noticed several strong carriers that were appearing on the waterfall display that did not correspond to signals shown in the P3 pass-band.  These signals ranged from 5-30 dB over the noise floor.  I suspected my sound interface, but Spectrum Lab showed it to be clean.  I double checked the recording device/properties/advanced and found it was set to “CD Quality, 16-bit, 44100 Hz”.  I changed it to “DVD Quality, 16-bit, 48000 Hz” and everything was just fine with the waterfall.
  • The software does support bidirectional rig control.  You will notice a small box, about the size of a check box, slightly to the left and down from the ORG window.  This is colored orange when rig control is unidirectional.  If you adjust the Setup/Configuration screen “Polling rate” to 1 or 2 seconds, then that box will be colored green.  Now any VFO change will show up on the ORG display (in theory).  For the most part it works fine with my K3, but it does seem to get upset when I change bands.

  • You can use Split Tuning for optimal transmit tone generation.  Since WSJT-X can sample up to 4 KHz of spectrum for JT65 and JT9 signals, it is possible to see and decode both areas at once (if you have a receive pass-band that can handle 4 KHz).  However the audio pass-band on transmit may well block higher frequency tones.  In my case, I could decode a signal at 3000 Hz with no problem, but there was zero output because 3000 Hz tones were out of my transmit pass-band.  By enabling Split in the Setup/Configuration screen AND setting my K3 to Split, WSJT-X will shift the transmit VFO to keep the generated tones in a 1500-2000 Hz window.  This works in both unidirectional and bidirectional Rig Control modes.  By the way, when this feature is enabled, a “S” appears in the orange or green box near the ORG window.

Just what I need — another mode for WAS and DXCC

With one JT9 QSL confirmed in LotW, I guess I’m on my way, but the most important thing is that I’ve got WSJT-X integrated with my HRD log book and JT-Alert, plus I’ve updated my tQSL software to version 1.14 (which recognizes JT9).  The only “got-ya” I ran across is that HRD Logbook 6.1 doesn’t handle JT9 by default.  You have to add that mode by selecting “Configure” then “Modes”, then adding JT9.  While an entry might show up as JT9 when logged, if I edited the entry in HRD Logbook, to add the QRZ data for example, it would overwrite the mode and change it to JT65.  Once the new mode was added to HRD Logbook, the JT9 setting became sticky.

At the moment, I’ve got WSJT-X configured to control my rig directly, since I’ve been having control issues with HRD 6.0 (the program will stop detecting frequency changes after a few minutes of operation even though it still processes things like mode or band changes — I’ve updated to 6.1 but have yet to confirm the problem has been fixed).  Fortunately, JT-Alert has always directly access the HRD logbook to append new entries, so HRD doesn’t need to be running in the background.

Its been sort of fun watching the waterfall and seeing many JT9 signals jammed into a tight space, most of them rock steady, then observing some signals drift dozens or hundreds of Hertz over the course of a minute.  Someday I’d like to setup my KX3 just as a JT9 “skimmer”, but it is so drifty on transmit I would never try it — at least not until I do the full temperature calibration.

A final trick for August

Having a bit of spare time on my hands today, I finally installed Version 1.2 Beta of the WSJT-X, which is Joe Taylor’s implementation of JT-9 and JT-65.  Although it pained me to stop using Joe Large’s version of JT65-HF, which has served me well for two and a half years, when I saw “Download no longer available, JT65-HF project abandoned” on Laurie’s JT-Alert website, I figured it was time to move on.  Plus I knew that there were JT-9 signals lurking a couple of KHz above the usual JT-65 waterfall spots.

The installation went smooth as silk, even for someone who hadn’t read the manual.   It took me a bit to figure out how to scale the waterfall window by twiddling with the individual controls, and eventually I figured out that the “JT65 2500 JT9” setting controlled the frequency that JT-9 signals would begin to be decoded (and what the shift 2 KHZ button was for).  Going into configuration I soon had my station info entered, and my rig control information all set.  The test buttons for PTT and Xmit allowed me to get the transmit levels set (unsurprisingly completely overloaded until I backed the gain slider down to about half).  I also assumed that the RX signal bar on the left shouldn’t be pegged off scale, so I adjusted the digital slider down until things were about half scale there too.

Sure enough, signals began to decode every minute — lots more of them that I was used to (it seemed like JT65-HF would decode six or so on 14.076, but I was decoding more than a dozen (they would scroll out of the decode window every minute).  Eventually I found a station that seemed to be running JT-9 (very narrow bandwidth) who was calling CQ, and I double clicked on his decoded message and checked on the button to enable transmit.  A few seconds later my rig was in transmit, and the signal monitor produced an almost constant tone — but I could hear the slightest warble.  After 50 seconds of transmit, I was in my first JT-9 contact with a station in Uruguay.

Being the backward-sort of person I am, its now time to read the manual.  Plus I need to install the new version of JT-Alert which supports WSJT-X, and get it interfaced into my HRD 6.0 logbook.

Where did the summer go?

As I type this, my K3 sits disconnected from its usual spot, a condition it has been in since the early June when I took things apart for Field Day.   Between Field Day, two family vacations, and my club’s ILLW Beavertail activation, “personal” ham radio has taken an aside this summer (I made hundreds of contacts during FD and the ILLW, but none under my own call).

I made one CW QSO in June plus a half-dozen Satellite QSOs in preperation for Field Day.  I made a few 6 meter QSOs during an opening in July, and one SSB QRP QSO while we were out in Yellowstone (despite the 10,000+ foot altitude, very few signals were heard on 20 or 17 meters).  But on this, the last day of August, I have zero QSOs for the month.

So here’s to hoping the K3 gets back on air in time!

[Edited to say that the bands are poor as we seem to be in the midst of a CME strike.  However I have 3 JT65 QSOs under my belt before 23:59:59.9999 so I’m good to go!]

Digital Go Box

I attended a American Red Cross Regional Disaster Institute two weeks ago, and had the pleasure of meeting Frank O’Laughlin, WQ1O.  Frank’s a busy guy, deeply involved with ARES and the ARC.  His passion is putting together various “Go-Boxes” to support emergency communication in disasters.  One of Frank’s comments during the meeting was that most hams would need many hours to collect the parts to assemble a portable station.  Frank showed several examples of his work, and they were very complete:  Rig, AC Power Supply, power/digital/RF wiring in place, and current meter.  Even a clock.  The user would simply put the station on the desk, connect the AC power and coax, and be up and running with NBEMS or voice.

Of course I have my 6-pound ham station in a bag, but a QRP HF rig isn’t very useful in a local disaster.   So I decided to follow the excellent example that Frank provided and build a Digital Go Box (DGB), and a portable antenna in a bag to round things out.

The basis of the DGB is a 2 meter Yaesu FT2900R.  A Samlex SEC-1223BBM.  This 23 amp switching supply also has a built-in battery backup and charger.  Designed for use with a large SLA, this is also compatible with LiFePO4 batteries that have been designed as SLA replacements.  A LFP-B12V12AH was chosen (12 AH — enough to run the rig for an hour at 50% duty cycle and many hours on receive).  That battery has full battery management build in:  over voltage, over discharge, over current, and cell balancing.  The 4 amp output of the power supply will completely charge it in 3 hours.  A SignaLink USB interface and Asus 1215B Netbook round out the setup.  The traditional AC power supply for the netbook has been replaced with a DC car charger, allowing operation from 12 VDC.

A Pelican 1560 case (rolling suitcase-style) was chosen as the housing.  This is deep enough to allow the standard foam to be used on the top and bottom, and has enough area that the rig, ps, battery, charger, interface, and Netbook can be mounted to a 1/4″ plywood base that can be lifted out of the case.  The plywood base with equipment weighs 18 pounds.  The rolling case weighs 19 pounds, so the total is 37 pounds.

A second bag contains an On Stage Speaker Stand SS7761B, 50 feet of RG8X coax, and a 9 foot long Diamond CP22E antenna, and a 25 foot AC power cord.  This bag weighs 20 pounds and can deploy a high gain vertical antenna that is ground based with a total height of 15 feet.

Frank is a big fan of boxes that you just open on whatever surface you have and screw the coax on.  This approach is a bit different in that I wanted to keep the box watertight and felt that the size of the box was a bit large for a tabletop.  So I decided to use the Pelican case as it is designed — as a padded protective case.  Once the case is open, you lift the plywood base out with two handles on the side and place it on the table.  Everything is then ready to go.  Maybe the case can become a nice foot-stool?

TX5K Clipperton Island QSL Arrives Today

My TX5K QSL arrived in the mail today. I worked them on all bands from 160-10 meters and all modes.

That makes 186 confirmed countries with 724 Challenge points.  My goal of 200 LotW countries by year’s end seems more and more like a stretch.  The bands have been quite poor for the past month or more.

HSMM-MESH WB4SON-AP1 Ready for Duty

I setup and configured a Linksys WRT54GS v2.0 Router today to run HSMM-Mesh software version 0.4.3.  Unfortunately there are no nodes in my area yet, and only two others registered in RI, but eventually this might become a high speed data backbone for Rhode Island.

At the moment the node is just in my house on the top floor, but eventually it will be mounted to a mast along with a 2.4 GHz dish and a 2.4 GHz omni antenna.

As a FYI, it pulls about 0.80 amps when fed with a 5 VDC source, or 0.23 amps when fed with 13.8 VDC.  A 20 AH SLA would run this for more than three days of darkness, and a 25 watt solar panel would keep up with demand assuming 4 hours of full sun a day.

SKYWARN Training

It was a pleasure to attend Rob Macedo’s (KD1CY) Smithfield RI SKYWARN Training Class on July 13.  While scheduled to last 3 hours, it proceeded at a casual pace and was done in about 2.5 hours.  The class covers criteria for reporting severe weather to the NWS SKYWARN line, and focuses a good deal on tornado/funnel cloud signs.

Our local SKYWARN program is run out of the Taunton MA NWS facility, which has recently added a six meter link into the KA1RCI Repeater Network.  The only other tie into RI is the 146.76 repeater, which has not had decent state-wide coverage for years (perhaps less than 20% of the state can reach that machine).
