Satellite Tracker – Finally Underway

Toward the end of last year I decided to make a small antenna satellite tracking system that was based on the Raspberry Pi.  It was to be entirely self-contained — no other computer devices required.  Seven months later, I’ve finally gotten around to starting the project.

One of the most important components of the system is the GPS receiver, which is used to establish the antenna system lat/lon/altitude as well as the time and date (UTC).  I’m happy to report that I have the Adafruit Ultimate GPS Breakout receiver up and running using the standard python GPS Daemon (gpsd).

The only trick was to modify the standard Rasberrian Wheezy distribution so that it no longer uses ttyAMA0 (the RPi’s RXD/TXD Serial Port) for the default Debug Terminal, which frees up those lines for use with the GPS.  This is a two step process.

First, the /boot/cmdline.txt file has to be edited to remove the reference to “console=ttyAMA0,115200”.  from the line that begins “dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 console=ttyAMA0,115200 …”

Second, the /etc/inittab file has to be edited to comment out the final line (in my case) which spawns the getty process using ttyAMA0.  Simply add a “#” in front of the line that begins “T0:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyAMA0 …”

After rebooting, to put the above two changes in place, add a gpsd process that uses the ttyAMA0 port to interface to the GPS:  “sudo gpsd /dev/ttyAMA0 -F /var/run/gpsd.sock”

Finally “cgps -s” can be used to check things out.  Do keep in mind that the receiver can take about a minute to lock onto satellites (you will see the red “FIX” LED blinking once every other second prior to the fix, then slow down to once every 15 seconds or so once a fix has been acquired).

Here’s the RPi Generation 2 hookup.  Power the board with +5 and ground, then run  RPi TXD to the GPS RX, and RPi RXD to the GPS TX.  Note, the GPS has a built-in 5V to 3.3 converter, so all the I/O is RPi friendly 3.3 volts.

Is 5BDXCC Rare?

I was curious about the number of 5BDXCC awards and ran across this notice concerning W1AW making 5BDXCC on April 3, 2012.  Their nemesis was also 80 Meters.  Suddenly I feel much better.  My plaque is on order now.

Nearly four decades after the introduction of the Five Band DXCC Award (5BDXCC), W1AW, the Hiram Percy Maxim Station has achieved this milestone. “As with most stations, we found that 80 meters was our stumbling block,” W1AW Station Manager Joe Carcia, NJ1Q, explained. “One by one, we picked off the needed entities, and W1AW now holds 5BDXCC #7307. W1AW’s 5BDXCC plaque will hang in a place of honor at the station.”

Thank you snow!

In a way, I got back into the hobby in 2011 due to several huge back-to-back snowstorms.  I had bad cabin fever, and that drove me get back on the air just to have something to do other than working and staring at walls.

Here were are again, as you can see from the picture below.  We’ve had about 3x our usual annual snowfall amount, and the snows keep coming every few days.  We had the second coldest February in history.  And even before winter is over we have already slipped our way to the 2nd snowiest winter in history.  There is hope that spring is right around the corner (I saw my first cardinal this week — his bright red shining like a flame against the stark white background of snow.)  But it’s obvious that winter still has us clutched hard to his frozen chest.  Anyway, I’ll rationalize that my antennas are strung through the trees you can see below, and therefore the photo has something to do with ham radio.

80-Meter DXCC Completed!!

I just received confirmation from J75D in Dominica for a 80-Meter contact.  That brings my LotW total to 99.  Plus I have a QSL from Western Sahara S01WS in hand, so that makes 100 confirmed 80-Meter contacts. Therefore 80-Meter DXCC is technically completed.

There is still a chance that another LotW confirmation or two might come in the next couple of weeks.  But if it doesn’t, I’ll drive to ARRL HQ (2 hours away) and ask them to check the cards into LotW.

With 80-Meter DXCC completed, that completes the basic 5BDXCC.  With 12/17/30-Meter DXCC already in hand, that means it is actually 8BDXCC.

February DX Update

Yet another month has flown by, which is a good thing, considering the horrible winter we’ve had (second coldest February in history, snowiest February in history, etc).

With QSL cards in hand, the country total is 229, with 99 countries confirmed on 80-Meters, and 1073 Challenge points.  Plus 252 countries have been logged.

I have several QSL requests out for 80-Meter contacts, and there are several more contacts that were made in the CW DX Contest last week, so its fairly likely that 80-Meter DXCC will happen in the next month or so, which will complete 5BDXCC (actually 8BDXCC since the other bands have already been confirmed).

1,444 Days Later…Am I a REAL DXer?

On February 12, 2011, I worked Rob, Vy2SS, a Canadian station — my second contact and my first “DX” since restarting the hobby in 2011.  It wasn’t really my first DX contact, I had worked a couple as a Novice back in 1970 & 71.  Still, before I turned off the big switch in 2001 and went silent for a decade, you could count the total number of DX stations I had worked on two hands and still have fingers left over for a few new ones.

DX was something that seemed impossible and beyond my means, so I never took it seriously.  This was despite working as a volunteer at a QSL bureau, where I got to sort QSL cards from far off lands that were headed to other lucky hams in the 4-land.  That was something that other hams did, but not me.

After restarting my hobby, by the end of 2011, I had 59 confirmed DX countries and had worked 152 band-countries (DXCC Challenge Points).  At that point, a friend of mine suggested that I should set a goal to get my first DXCC.  I took him up on the challenge, and less than three months later I had my first DXCC Certificate in hand (CW of course).  I was hooked.

  • At the end of 2011, I had 59 confirmed countries and 152 Challenge Points
  • At the end of 2012, I had 173 confirmed countries and 606 Challenge Points
  • At the end of 2013, I had 208 confirmed countries and 841 Challenge Points
  • At the end of 2014, I had 218 confirmed countries and 948 Challenge Points
  • On Jan 26, 2015, I had 220 confirmed countries and 1000 Challenge Points

3 years, 11 months and 14 days later, I completed the hunt for DXCC Challenge.  The ARRL recorded it as completed two days later on Jan 28, and I received the Plaque today.

What’s left?  More Challenge Points, of course.  Perhaps I can get to 1,500 in a couple of years (that’s about 185 countries for 8 bands, plus a handful on 160 Meters).  And 80 Meter DXCC is still out there.  As of today I need 4 more confirmed countries to complete that.  Who knows, maybe I can start chasing 160 Meters or even 2 Meters via EME!

250 Countries in the Log

One of my 2015 goals was to have 250 countries in my log, which I accomplished today on 15 CW when I worked V73NS (not in the ARRL CW DX Contest interestingly enough).  First time for Marshall Island for me.

Only 227 have been confirmed so far in LotW or via QSL card.

Speaking of the ARRL CW DX Contest, I did work 9 more new countries on 80 Meters, 7 of which were on LotW.  My current total is 92 on 80 Meters, so I hope a few more will confirm and help me get to my 5BDXCC goal (actually 8 bands once 80 meters is complete).

It’s a Small World After All….

So, I’m reading the “ARRL Contest Update for February 11, 2015” this morning, and note the following item:  “This YouTube video by Mike WB6DJI shows how a noise-canceling system can make a big improvement when properly configured and used. He uses the NCC-1 Noise Canceling Controller with a TS-990S transceiver. ”

So I watch the video, and Mike demonstrates how effective that NCC-1 system is.

But wait…  Exactly who does K1N come back to right after Mike turns on his noise reduction system at the 1 minute mark?

It IS a small world after all!

Last Band for K1N Completed

I’ve been adding a band or two a day for the past five days, and only needed 40 meters to have worked K1N on all bands from 160m to 10m.  It happened tonight around 8 PM with this exchange:

The first time he came back to me was with WB4ION (that would be a cool call), but the final acknowledgement was correct.  So I’ve completed the hunt, having worked mostly CW, but some SSB and RTTY too.  Woot!

Success with Navessa Island

20-Meter CW seemed fairly sparse this morning about 0900 local time, so I watched my panascope for a bit, determined the pattern, and watched K1N work near the upper edge of the pileup (about 30 KHz).  A couple of calls and I snagged a contact.  Now I can breathe.

Looking for another band, I noticed them on 15 SSB (actually it was impossible NOT to notice them between their S9 signal and 70+ KHz wide pileup).  Lots of QRM on K1N, but their signal is so strong the QRM is merely background noise.  However, with a 70+ KHz wide pileup that’s going to cause trouble in the long run.

I made a quick audio recording of some of the nonsense you can hear on K1N’s frequency (lots of jokes about banana splits, etc.).

I figured that the record breaking collection of bozo’s on 15 SSB made that band/mode a lost cause, so I looked elsewhere.  Fortunately they were also on 30-Meter RTTY with a DOWN split.  Since a large number of stations were calling with an UP split, that made it pretty easy to work them with the proper split.  Two bands down, seven to go!
