ISS Cross Band Repeater QSO

While I’ve worked the ISS using their original cross band repeater a few times in the past, I don’t recall if I’ve worked it using the new gear on 145.990 (PL 67.0) / 437.800  (V/U).

Thanks to Magicalmike KO4PDI for the QSO!

By the way, lots of the information about the ISS Cross Band Repeater is out of date, especially many of the popular sources for the SATPC32 Doppler.SQF file.  The correct entry for the DOPPLER.SQF file is:

ISS,437800,145990,FM,FM,NOR,0,0,Cross Band Repeater

And the correct entry for the SATPC32 SubTone.SQF file (at least for the Icom IC-9700) is:

ISS,67.0,$3F,1

And don’t forget to set select T1 within SATPC32

Satellite Station: Icom IC-9700 being controlled by SATPC32. Antennas are M2 eggbeaters.

  1. Wonderful Bob. Glad I could be your first. Feel free to join my FB group where I teach a lot about SAts and about the S.A.T. Box. It’s a wonderful tool and always accurate as far as the birds go. I have made 5 Voice contacts with Kjell Lingrind on the ISS over a period between July August and September. Sadly there are two HAMs on the ISS and they have not activated the radio for voice yet. Ever since Kjell returned no one has taken up the cause to chat with HAMs all over the world. Be well my friend and Merry Christmas.

      Michael,

I am looking for a handheld with full-duplex support for easier satellite communication.
      1. I like the Icom ID52A for its waterfall display but it seems not to support full duplex operation.
      2. The Kenwood TH-D75A is nice. Does it support full-duplex operation?
      3. The Yaesu FT-5DR has at least a band scope display. Can it do full duplex?

There are older handhelds that support full-duplex, like TH-D72, but I want a handheld that is currently in production.

What is your favorite handheld for satellite operations? And antenna?

      Regards,

Neither the ID-52, FT-5DR, or the TH-D75 support full duplex. The older TH-D72 is full duplex, and there are several older radios that show up from time to time on eBay that support cross-band full duplex.

A fairly inexpensive approach is simply to purchase TWO HTs. Use one for transmit and the other for receive. Usually you adjust your transmit frequency, and more often than not, that is UHF, which needs the largest doppler correction. So you hold the transmit HT in your had so you can use the PTT button and microphone. The other HT is strapped to the antenna and you run a headphone to your ear if that is the VHF downlink, they you don’t have to adjust for doppler. That leaves you another hand to hold the antenna. I know MANY people who do that using BaoFeng HTs (which cost about $50 for a pair).

I almost always recommend using a crossbeam antenna from Arrow. If you are going to be using it with TWO HTs, then you don’t need the duplexer.

        Good luck!
