SCS DR-7400 Modem and the Icom IC-9100

I haven’t been able to get my Icom IC-9100 and SCS DR-7400 P4 modem to play nicely together.  No matter what I’ve tried, the modulation level was too high, showing substantial ALC action, which would lead to a distorted transmit signal.

Some investigation last week indicated that the DATA2 connector on the back of the IC-9100 expects a VERY low level of audio, something on the order of 30 mvpp.  The minimum audio output level on my DR-7400 is about 41 mvpp (max is about 3200 mvpp).

The solution will be to make a small adapter cable (Male miniDIN-6 to Female miniDIN-6 — the same connectors used on a PS2 keyboard extension cable) with a voltage attenuator built in.  Something on the order of a 470 ohm resistor across the IC-9100 audio input line and ground, with a 3300 ohm resistor in series to the audio out line of the DR-7400.   Combined with the 1K output impedance of the DR-7400, that will produce a 10-1 voltage division.  So 300 mvpp from the DR-7400 (one order of magnitude above the minimum and one order of magnitude above the maximum), will produce about 30 mvpp at the IC-9100 input (a range of 3 mvpp to 300 mvpp).

hi there, i tryed to get my ic 9100 going on that prog too but all i get is a Ham lib error:IO what ever that means ,no matter what i try it just wont hook up , looks like the RX is ok just no freq or TX ,i would like to have JT65 and JT9 with IC9100,, so for JT9 i have to use my icom706mk2g LOL.

      Hi Tony,

Your issue of no TX when using the USB connection on the IC-9100 is a common one. There are CAT commands that allow the IC-9100 to enter/exit transmit, but few programs know about them. Hamlib does work, but they had an error in their commands. Be sure you have the latest version. The latest versions of WSJT-X work just fine with the IC-9100 USB connection — why not go with the guy who invented the technology (Joe Taylor) rather than mess around with older programs that don’t work?

For older programs that don’t deal with CAT tx/rx commands and insist on using RTS off a traditional serial port as the PTT signal, there is a program called CAT7200 that simulates that — it creates a virtual serial port that acts like a PTT control port. http://www.cantab.net/users/john.wiseman/Documents/CAT7200.html
